Kweelie Can’t Take the Adrenaline

Let us start by saying that Kweelie ALMOST made the journey from Lake Taupo to Raglan. We were 5 km away when Kweelie let out a howl (similar to that uttered early in the day at the ropes course, more on that in a bit) that could be anything but good, leading us to pull to the side. After acting like we actually know about cars and checking the basics, we decided it was time to call AA. We decided to make the best of our setback, grabbing the fudge we bought at the honey hive today and enjoying it on the side of the road, throwing in some wiggles and dance moves for good measure. We had two people stop while we waited offering their help (the Kiwis really are as nice as their reputation makes them out to be) and in a short while we hopped into the front of the tow truck with Kweelie coasting on the back. Maybe it was a protest to the massive amount of driving we have been doing, or maybe Kweelie just wanted to score an adrenaline rush by riding the tow truck. He also could have been a bit jealous watching our antics earlier that day…

We started out in the morning with our signature oatmeal: 4 packets of oatmeal, 2 bananas, 1 apple, chopped walnuts, milk and water to desired consistency and a handful of chocolate chips on top. We drove to Taupo, a cute town which sits right on Lake Taupo where we grabbed Internet with a latte and muffin and watched life crawl by. We had a quick lunch and hit the road to Rock N Ropes, a ropes course a bit north of Taupo. We drove up to find lots of heart pumping high wire obstacles and both a trapeze leap and a giant swing if the others don’t get your heart pumping enough. We paired up with a great couple from Seattle to tackle the course with huge smiles, encouraging each other on. Kelly stepped up to the plate and took the plunge on the big swing, earning a delicious honey ice cream cone at the honey hive store next door (think everything honey, including lotions, mead, and ice cream – with a live hive to boot). After 3 hours on the course we were tired and sunburnt but happy as clams. We stopped to look at Huka Falls, a huge waterfall that funnels through a narrow channel in the rock, making our rapids from yesterday seem like ripples. After snapping some pictures it was back on the road. Next stop? Raglan…

Which brings us back to Kweelie’s little tantrum. We hopped out at the mechanic’s shop, parting ways with Kweelie for the night by grabbing the essentials. We walked down the hill into picturesque Raglan with a beautiful sunset lighting up the bay. Unfortunately everything in town is closed by 8:30 PM so we did our best to find a place to sleep, eventually making it to a Holiday Park that had an available room. We tossed together soup for dinner, cleaned off in the shower and then hit the sack, hoping for the best when we hear the news about Kweelie’s condition tomorrow morning.
