We are…

Burnt! To a crisp. We were so excited to be laying on a beach, in beautiful warm weather on the 12th of December that we may have pushed it a bit too far. That and the fact that we had no suntan lotion on our bodies. Which leads us to one of our trip takeaways:

– Use SPF!

Our day was spent lounging around our campground, swimming in the ocean, and enjoying a truly lazy day (we’ll treat this as our lazy last day). Normally our idea of a lazy morning is to wake up at 6:30 am and read / eat before a solid hour workout. Instead, for the first time since we have had Kweelie, we stayed in the same place for two nights, meaning no driving to do whatsoever. It is a nice feeling.

After discovering our burns, we spent the afternoon heaping the lotion onto our stomachs and cracking up with sunburn jokes. Kelly took the trophy by getting Jeff to fall for the pink spraypaint in the bathroom joke…. We played cards, enjoyed our crackers, and finished off the evening with a quinoa, sausage, toasted pumpkin seeds, roasted garlic, ricotta and tomato sauce masterpiece.

Because we haven’t been reported to animal welfare and the trip is almost over, it is a good time to tell you that Kelly has been asking every animal she sees “want to come in my van?” (you probably expected this, and by every animal I mean dog, sheep, bird, duck, kia, kiwi, donkey, llama, horse, deer, penguin, seal). It culminated with her putting oats out to get a bird (now nicknamed tippy tap) into our van. The bird instead took the oats back to its nest but it was a success none the less. Let’s just say she will be happy to come home and see her pups.

The next morning we had our newly named crumpets over easy (so named because of what the lemon curd looks like on top of the ricotta) and then explored the beaches with our coffee. Soon we were back on the road towards the Bay of Islands, a series of inlets with ~150 uninhabited islands. We parked on the beach to enjoy the view (although the Marlborough Sounds take the cake in our opinion). After having crumpets with tuna and gherkins (pickles?) we rent kayaks for two hours and hit the ocean. We paddled around four islands, stopping at a few beaches and exploring a hiking trail on one of the islands. We finished the kayaking without any man overboards and only a little more damage to our sunburnt bods.

At our campsite for the night, we pulled out the cards and started our gin betting. It culminated in a mystery scramble bet that Kelly won and graciously made eggs with toasted oats, cinnamon, bananas and syrup (it tasted pretty good, French toast without the toast!). We wound down the night with one of our last soups and enjoyed our Bailey’s while slipping off to sleep with what sounded like tippy tap doing his thing on our roof.

Mmmm… the crumpets over easy and tuna & gherkins look fabulous. You should do a Kweelie cookbook. Can’t wait to see you! xx

I sent a comment to you yesterday regarding what you and Jeff want me to bring for Christmas Dinner, but maybe it didn’t jell. I could cook, bake, fry and dance, just to let me know so I can plan accordingly. I know you really want me to dance and sing!!

You two look great and eating well and burning pretty good, too. Can’t wait to see you but will give you a few days to settle down after 3 months of your exciting adventures. See you soon, xxoo

Glad someone fell for it! 🙂 Don’t worry, I have convinced her that sooner than “5 more years” is acceptable, and I even have it in writing. One day in the not super distant future…
